Abstract: This paper analyzes the safty operation conditions during the solar eclipse happened in Germany on March 20th 2015. Based on the operational data, an analysis is made on the measures taken by the German power system operators to deal with the impact of solar eclipse on power system operation. The results show that accurate solar generation forecast is an important precondition for preventing power grid from operational risks brought about by variable generations. Besides, plentiful dispatchable generation resources such as coal fired generation, power grid interconnection are the basis for assuring system opeartion security with high penetrations of variable generations. Good electricity market design is also an important way to reduce the risks brought about by variable generations.
