Abstract: In order to smooth the output of wind farms, a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) based energy storage system (ESS) is equipped at the grid bus, in which a bi-directional AC/DC converter is used as the power regulator with the transient mathematic model derived in the synchronous rotating d-q coordinate system. Considering the characteristics of strong coupling and nonlinearity of the mathematic model, the linear transformation is conducted on the model with the state feedback exact linearization method. Then, the variable exponent reaching law of the variable structure control is used to design the close-loop controllers of the linear system. The simulation results indicate that the VRB-based energy storage system can smooth the fluctuation of wind farm outputs through fast charge and discharge process when the wind speed changes rapidly. And compared with the PI control, the variable structure controller shows better dynamic performance. In addition, the independent adjustability of active and reactive power of the VRB-based energy storage system can decouple the wind power control.
