Abstract: Regarding the main steam pipe explosion accident that occurred in a power plant, the analysis on the failure of the main steam pipe is conducted by means of the combination of macro structural stress analysis and microscopic study. Several related factors, such as piping mechanics, component structure, material component, metallographic structure, piping mechanical property, and section analysis, etc are also taken into account. The result shows that the unsuitable base metal and mismatched welding material are the major causes of the explosion. In addition, there exist some other severe defects in the weld joints such as cracks and blowholes. From the result it is pointed out that the safety testing of the power pipeline has to be enhanced to remove the potential safety risks and avoid such problems happening again.
