Abstract: Relay technology in communication data link is the bottleneck for large-size unmanned helicopters to perform long-distance, over-the-horizon transmission line inspection flight. In this paper, various relay modes and feasibility are analyzed and evaluated, and the application and field validation of various relay modes for large-size unmanned helicopter transmission line inspection is presented, including aerial relays using unmanned helicopters, ground fixed relays, vehicle mobile relays and OPGW optical fiber relays. The method and experience of setting up ground relay stations by using available resources according to real circumstances are introduced. In addition, some suggestions are provided about relay modes for unmanned helicopter inspection. It is also proposed to build up a database of relay resources for communication data link, so as to provide real-time communication technical support for practical unmanned helicopter inspection.
