Abstract: The electric discharge mechanism and pollution flashover characteristics of stained insulators are the core elements of the research on technical measures preventing flashover caused by polluted insulators. To date, many experiments and theoretical investigations have been conducted worldwide, which generated many valuable results. This paper presents an overview of the researches over the last 30 years on pollution flashovers. It provides a systematic summary and analysis of various factors and mechanisms that influence pollution flashover voltage including factors such as physical characteristics of stained surface, flashing formation mechanisms, test methods, flashover characteristics and the mode of insulator configuration. It summarizes the relationships between the pollution flashover voltage and the mode of insulators configuration, and proposes appropriate insulator configurations under different environments.

Key words: insulator, configuration, pollution flashover voltage, pollution flashover performance, artificial contamination test
