Abstract: This paper studies the real-time performance of Modbus/TCP protocol. Theoretical analysis is conducted on establishing of Modbus/TCP transportation layer and data transmission time of Modbus application frame over Ethernet. Modbus/TCP protocol is applied in low-voltage power distribution system. A testing platform using intelligent circuit breaker as a modbus slave device is built to test the real-time performance of Modbus/TCP protocol over Ethernet. Detailed analysis of transmission delay on Modbus / TCP over Ethernet and Modbus over serial link is given based on test results. It concludes that Modbus/TCP has good real-time performance and satisfies communication needs of intelligent power distribution equipments. It is an efficient solution for the network communication of low-voltage power distribution system.
