Abstract: Reactive power compensation is one of the effective means to improve voltage stability. The reactive power compensation problem of multi-infeed HVDC systems is more complex as the conventional voltage stability index can not effectively represent the relation between voltage and power of multi-infeed HVDC systems. The multi-infeed voltage stability index (MVSI) is proposed for judging the voltage stability of multi-infeed systems, which is based on multi-infeed interaction factor(MⅡF), node weight and time domain analysis. Furthermore, a site scheme is proposed for reactive power compensation. Firstly, the voltage weak areas are identified with the help of critical impedance. Then, the priority compensation node is selected on the basis of voltage weak areas and MVSI. The simulation results proved the validity and accuracy of the index.
