Abstract: The accomplishment of some time-critical application in smart substation, such as relay protection, is determined by the performance of process-level network. An OPNET based modeling method for process-level network is proposed in order to evaluate network reliability and real time characteristic quantitatively. According to device structure, packet classification and flow characteristic, models of different kinds of intelligent electronic device(IED) including merging unit, intelligent terminal and protection device are built. Then model of each bay is created based on IED model. Model of process-level network is also established using star topology group method. Finally, study of Virtual Local Area Network is conducted on the established platform. Simulation and testing results demonstrate validity of proposed model.
