Abstract: Comparing with low voltage lines, insulator strings are longer and geographic span is greater in UHV lines, hence dynamic characteristics of insulator strings windage yaw is more prominent. A numerical model of 4 spans insulator strings-conductor is established. Simulation study of windage yaw characteristics in UHV insulator strings under fluctuating wind with speed time history is performed by changing wind speed, vertical loads, conductor types and single/double insulator strings. The results show that fluctuating response coefficient β of UHV insulator strings is between 1.1~1.2 under different conditions. With constant wind speed, insulator strings windage yaw angle decrease as conductor cross section increase. Double composite insulators and disc insulators can be simplified as corresponding single type when calculating windage yaw angle of UHV insulator strings.
