Abstract: To save the project investment and improve the reliability of the breakers, the feasibility of the AC UHV line-breaker without closing resistor is analyzed, and the criteria of canceling UHV line-breaker closing resistor are put forward. It is pointed out through analysis that the difficulty of canceling UHV line-breaker closing resistor is bigger than that in the 500 kV project, but it is still possible. The simulation model is built by EMTP program to calculate, the closing and single phase reclosing overvoltage, the time to crest and the line flashover rate of the Suzhou-Shanghai UHV line-breaker without closing resistor. Based on the calculation results and the criteria, it is suggested that the closing resistor be installed in the line-breakers at Suzhou side , but not at Shanghai side.

Key words: UHV, breaker, closing resistor, overvoltage, time to crest, flashover rate
