Abstract: The process layer network has a direct impact on the security and reliable operation of smart substation. Research on the performances of different network modes can provide an essential reference for the selection of process layer network mode. Firstly, the characteristics of different network modes are introduced, including direct sampling and tripping, network sampling and network tripping. The application principle of VLAN and priority level is elaborated. Then, the protection operation time under different network modes and network conditions is tested in detail. At last, an analysis is made on the characteristics of the process layer tripping time. The testing results show that the direct tripping time is stable; the network tripping time increases with the increase of the network traffic; and the discreteness is relatively large.
