Abstract: In order to investigate the differential protection characteristics for on-load-tap-changer transformers of UHV, the basic performances of differential transformer protection and its unbalanced differential current were studied, by which it is found that the conventional protection of on-load-tap-changer transformers may have a potential risk during the transformer tap adjustment. Through the further analysis of the influencing factors on the characteristics of unbalanced differential current, suggestions about the selection of rated current of differential protection for on-load-tap-changer transformers were proposed. In addition, the differential current distribution during the transformer tap adjustment is obtained by the simulation and the setting strategy is accordingly provided, which is also validated by the simulation.
