Abstract: The hysteretic characteristic of generator excitation system weakens generator damping, thereby increasing the risk of low frequency oscillation. Most typical power system stabilizer(PSS) models use multistage advance steps to compensate the hysteretic characteristics, which results in limited gains and insufficient damping of middle-low frequencies. A new PSS design idea is proposed in this paper, in which the input is a synthetic phasor of active power negative variation and rotating speed variation, and the phase advances automatically. It can solve the problem of multistage advance compensations. Theoretical analysis and simulation calculation have verified the adaptive phase ability of the new PSS and its ability for suppressing the low frequency oscillation, recovering from large-disturbance faults and the reverse regulating effects.
