Abstract: The energy demand system is not only affected by various factors inside energy system, but also influenced by various other factors including economic development, social natural environment, population factor, technological progress. It is a typical nonlinear system with very complex relationship among various factors. System engineering methods are used to analyze influencing factors of energy demand and relationship amongthem. The interpretative structural model is used to analyze hierarchical relationshipamong influencing factors of energy demand. Surface factors, intermediate factors, core factors and source factors that affect energy demand are summarized. The analysis shows that population, urbanization level, living standard, energy consumption structure and energy use efficiency are direct influencing factors of energy demand change. The economic development level is the core factor, and the source factors can be divided into three categories: international economic situation, various related policies and major activities.

Key words: energy demand, influencing factors, interpretative structural modeling
