Abstract: This paper analyzed and summarized the fault type and test method about the medium voltage XLPE cable. Find that the researches about fault types and test methods for cable middleware and terminal are more than the cable body. Then, reproduced the fault of insulation damage in XLPE cable body artificially and tested it, focused on the fault model of insulation damage with copper tape shield and semiconducting tape fault, described the processing of experiment with OWTS method in detail, analyzed the result, located the partial discharge position. It illustrated that the OWTS system can detect and locate the damage in XLPE cable body effectively. This provided a method and a basis for XLPE cable maintenance and testing.

Key words: cable, fault detection, partial discharge, oscillating wave testing system (OWTS), XLPE cable, cable insulation damage, partial discharge localization
