Abstract: Nowadays, crowbar protection is one of the effective fault ride-through(FRT) methods for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). However, the controllability of a DFIG may be lost temporarily. To avoid this problem stator crowbar(SC) protection as an alternative has attracted wide attention. But SC cannot provide the DFIG with desired dc-link voltage. So, a combination of SC and discharge resistor is proposed to improve the capability of FRT of the DFIG. Firstly, the theoretical basis of the SC protection is analyzed in the paper. And then the effect of different SC resistances on the system is investigated, based on which the best SC resistance is determined. Finally, the combination method is detailed and simulation is conducted by using PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
