Abstract: An investigation is made on the corrosion protection of the transmission steel towers, such as the initial corrosion protection maintenance time, the maintenance intervals and maintenance cost. The corrosion resistance and cost of hot-dip galvanizing and thermal-spray Zn-Al-Mg-RE alloy coatings are compared in this paper. Based on the investigations and tests on two corrosion protection methods, the total life cycle (40 years) cost (LCC) of corrosion protection for transmission steel towers is calculated. It is concluded that the total LCC of hot-dip galvanizing is low for small lattice towers, while the total LCC of thermal-spray is low for large lattice towers and tube towers.

Key words: transmission steel tower, hot dip galvanizing, thermal spray, corrosion protection, life cycle cost (LCC)
