Data, as a key new production factor for the development of new productive forces in the digital era, is reshaping the development landscape of various industries. Artificial intelligence (AI), as an advanced production tool, has significantly enhanced production efficiency. The energy and power industry, serving as the cornerstone supporting the high-quality development of the whole society, is also a huge system where data and AI have broad application prospects. Deeply exploring the value of energy and power data elements and innovating the application of AI in the construction of new power systems have become core tasks for the industry's future development. The 2025 Government Work Report clearly states the need to actively promote the development and utilization of new energy, deeply tap the value of data resources, continuously advance the "AI+" initiative, and fully stimulate the innovative vitality of the digital economy. On the one hand, data elements and AI technologies are the core driving forces to stimulate productivity in the energy and power industry, urgently requiring in-depth research on innovative technologies, application scenarios, and model methods; on the other hand, practical challenges such as data ethics, AI dependency, network security, and policies and regulations cannot be ignored and need to be given key attention.
Against this backdrop, in-depth exploration of data elements and AI application technologies in the energy and power industry is of great strategic significance for ensuring high-quality energy supply, improving efficiency, enhancing security, and unleashing high-value potential. The editorial office of Electric Power specially invites Wang Jiye, Executive Director of the Big Data and Statistics Branch of the China Electricity Council, Professor-level Senior Engineer, and PhD Supervisor; Pu Tianjiao, Deputy Chief Engineer of the China Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Director of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence; Wang Chen, Chief Engineer of the National Engineering Research Center for Big Data System Software at Tsinghua University, Director of the Big Data Research Institute of Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute, and a think tank expert of the Big Data and Statistics Branch of the China Electricity Council; and Wang Yongzhen, Associate Professor, PhD Supervisor, and Deputy Director of the Department of Energy and Power Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology, to serve as guest editors, carefully planning the column "Energy and Power Data Elements and Artificial Intelligence Applications".
