Abstract: Different configuration schemes of the low-pressure (LP) drain pump of conventional island (CI) in nuclear power plants affect the reliability and economy of the LP heater drain system. In order to optimize the system performance, by analyzing the existing domestic codes and comparing the LP drain pump configuration schemes for the reactors of different types in China and aboard, the rationality of three-pump configuration is proposed from the economic aspect in consideration of the initial investment of the LP drain pump and its associated system and the operation cost. According to the preliminary selection result and the characteristic curve of the LP drain pump, through economic analysis, the flow and head of the LP drain pump are optimized and it is proposed that the flow of the LP drain pump should be selected according to the rated load condition. The optimization of the head selection reduces the operation cost.
